Our client, a nationally recognized and award-winning company in the health insurance vertical, has a contract opening for a Senior Underwiter. They have over 4 million customers and 5,000+ employees dedicated to providing innovative solutions that simplify the healthcare system, improve efficiency and outcomes while reducing costs.

Location: ** While the position is Remote, work from home, you must reside in North Carolina or one of the following states: Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Wisconsin, and Wyoming.

Contract Duration: 6+ Months

Required Skills & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree or advanced degree (where required). In lieu of degree, 7+ years of experience in related field.

  • 5+ years of experience in related field.

  • Property and Casualty experience is not acceptable as the only experience, if you have P&C experience, you also need Large Group Underwriting or Level Funded Experience.

  • MS Office skills are required and experience working with Optum

What You Will Be Doing

Daily Responsibilities

  • Manage Books of Business with up to 150,000 members and representing up to $400,000,000 in premium or premium equivalent.

  • Apply data analytics across book of business to identify trends or patterns and take corrective action as required.

  • Has the authority to make limited exceptions to standard underwriting policy and make underwriting recommendations to underwriters and associate underwriters

  • Manage and report monthly and YTD on all assigned financial and performance metrics as well as develop and produce ad hoc reports.

  • Act as Subject Matter Expert (SME) for the Department regarding their Business Segment and Corporate Projects.

  • Analyze underwriting risk and determine premium rates for fully insured contracts and recommends funding rates for Administrative Services Only (ASO) contracts.

  • Proactively utilize strong technical expertise to make recommendations regarding benefit plan design, stop loss levels, network feasibility and funding options to internal and external customers.

  • Actively participate in final rate negotiations and presentations with our large clients.

  • Recommend underwriting process and system changes resulting in enhanced productivity.

  • Participate in the Underwriting Department’s strategic and tactical planning.

  • Coach less experienced underwriters on matters related to risk selection and mitigation, data analytics and integrated goal management.

  • Assist with the development and provision of training to the underwriting staff, sales staff, and other departments in the principles and practices of underwriting and rating.
